Adult Services

For more than 25 years, Life Steps Foundation has provided alternatives to institutional life for people with physical, behavioral and developmental challenges. We premise our services on the basic tenet that all people have the right to choose how and where they want to live. Life Steps Adult Services empowers these individuals to become involved in their life management, make informed choices, and participate in self-advocacy. Our service model recognizes the unique challenges that people with developmental disabilities encounter and our programs address them all, from independent living and personal fulfillment to parenting and family preservation.

Supportive Living Services (SLS) &helps individuals who have developmental disabilities make informed choices about life management, where to live—people in this project live in their own apartments—lifestyle, roommates, leisure activities and self-advocacy. Through training and support, we help our clients reach their goals.　In a collaborative effort between the client and a Life Steps instructor, the client learns to be autonomous, develops a circle of friends and natural supports, and becomes a positive contributor to his or her community.

Independent Living Services (ILS) provides an alternative to the limitations of institutional life by offering education and training to people who have physical, emotional and developmental challenges. Participants in this project live with their families or in another supportive environment. ILS participants work closely with Life Steps instructors to develop the skills needed to meet everyday challenges.

Parent Training — A key factor in a child's growth and development is the parent / child bond and the interaction between them. Disrupting this bond can lead to poor self-esteem, poor emotional and intellectual development, and in extreme cases, child abuse, neglect and dissolution of the family. Parent Training teaches developmentally disabled parents how to provide a safe, healthy, nurturing and stimulating environment.

Seaside Learning Center— This resource-rich center offers a variety of social experiences for adults with developmental disabilities in a setting that encourages pursuit of personal development activities according to the individual’s expressed needs and preferred pace. P>

Social Dynamics Adult Day Program— This center-based program is uniquely designed for adults who have developmental disabilities and severe behavioral challenges. It provides an opportunity for individuals to actively learn appropriate techniques to communicate their needs, rather than resorting to maladaptive behavior. We recognize that behavior is a meaningful expression of an individual's thoughts and feelings. Maladaptive behaviors occur when people do not have the skills to make their needs, wants and desires known. Life Steps’ Social Dynamics project assists individuals to effectively communicate their needs, thereby decreasing their reliance on maladaptive behaviors.
